It’s so hard to believe that another year has passed. But what a year it has been for The Wellness Community of Central New Jersey—a year of growth and a year of deepening commitments.
I am writing once again to ask for your help—and to let you know about some of the amazing things that are happening.. Hopefully you saw the article in the Star-Ledger on January 3. The Wellness Community is partnering with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to offer a new program, called “Live Well! Life Beyond Cancer,” that will offer support and hope to those who are living beyond cancer—those who are facing “a new normal” as our Program Director, Ellen Levine, describes it. This is but one of the exciting programs that are offered by TWC—and by no other organization. If you were able to come to our Gala in November, you felt the sense of community—the sense of HOPE—in the room. We created “The Spirit of Courage” award this year and presented it to the family of Dawn Peragallo. Dawn lost her own battle with cancer in April but she left a wonderful legacy of HOPE: She created our “Kids Connect, Parents Connect” program because, as a young mother, she knew that children of those with cancer need a place to find support—and HOPE. This program fills a need—and has now grown to include teens.
The message is getting out that TWC is here and available for all who are touched by cancer. In order to help fund these programs, I will again be walking in TWC’s Marathon Fundraiser—Strides for Hope—in Big Sur (along the Pacific Coast Highway) on April 27. Once again, we have seen amazing growth in our team: to date 54 runners/walkers are planning to participate (up from 32 in 2007, 20 in 2006, and 13 in 2004)!
We are especially excited and humbled this year as two other family members are part of the team (in addition to our mother-daughter team): niece/cousin (Linda's daughter), Tiffany, and sister/aunt, Jan!!
Each of us is committed to raising a minimum of $3,000 for The Wellness Community.
The Wellness Community is the largest support program in the United States devoted solely to providing psychological and emotional support to individuals with cancer and their families free of charge. We have learned in the last 7 years that our sustaining dollars will always come from people like you who believe not only that our programs do make a difference but also that no one should face cancer alone. While Wellness Community programs cannot cure cancer, they do offer life-affirming education, support, and hope to those who are affected by cancer.
