FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is The Wellness Community?
A: TWC is a non-profit organization that provides psychological and social support for people with cancer and their families, in a comfortable home-like environment. The Wellness Community is a community of people affected by cancer supporting each other on their journey to health. Services include support groups, networking groups, individual and family counseling, stress management programs, educational workshops, and social activities.

Q: Who uses The Wellness Community?
A
: The Wellness Community offers programs for individuals who have cancer and who desire to improve the quality of the lives and to be an active partner along with their physicians and healthcare team. People who have had cancer and have completed medical treatments also attend to maintain their health while focusing on survivorship issues. Family and friends are also welcome to participate. No referral is needed.

Q. Why should I join The Wellness Community?
A:
The effectiveness of all The Wellness Community’s programs are validated by research which shows that those who attend support groups have a better quality of life, handle pain more effectively and have better relations with family than those who do not.  Stress reduction classes like Yoga and Tai Chi have been shown to boost the immune system and to reduce stress.  Our participants tell us that their groups become like family and help them deal with their cancer with grace, with courage and with hope.

Q: Can support people come even if the person with cancer doesn't want to?
A:
Yes! We have specific groups solely for family and friends of the person with cancer, providing an opportunity for people to share their experiences, learn how to best support the person with cancer, and also take care of themselves. Also, loved ones are welcome to attend all other parts of the program, such as educational workshops and stress management classes.

Q: How do I get involved with the Wellness Community?
A:
Weekly orientation sessions provide a great opportunity to learn more about TWC programs and benefits and are necessary for anyone who wants to join a Support Group. Orientation times are listed in our calendar. If you are interested in attending an educational workshop, social event or stress reduction class, just call us to let us know you are coming.  You are also invited to drop by The Wellness Community’s main headquarters in Salisbury to pick up a calendar and look around.  In addition, you may call and ask to be put on our mailing list.

Q: Must participants follow a specific program?
A:
No, participants decide for themselves which parts of the program that they believe will help them improve their own well-being, or that they feel most comfortable with. Some may choose to simply visit The Wellness Community to borrow a book from the library, use the Internet, or to simply enjoy a cup of tea.

Q: Are medical services or advice available?
A:
The Wellness Community does not have a medical staff or give medical advice.  Individuals seek their own treatment as they deem necessary.

Q: What does it cost to participate?
A:
Nothing...all programs and services are FREE. The Wellness Community is a nonprofit organization and is supported by tax-deductible contributions from the public, fund raising events, business donations and foundation grants.

Q: Is The Wellness Community program an alternative to medical treatment?
A:
