What are the Stages of Emotional Distress

While emotional reactions to the diagnosis, treatment, and side effects of cancer may vary widely, some responses are quite common. When first diagnosed, people may feel as though they are trapped in a bad dream. They wonder, “Why is this happening to me? Am I going to die? What will happen to my family? How will I cope?”

Before treatment begins, the fear of the unknown may seem overwhelming, “What will chemotherapy be like? What side effects will I experience? Will I lose my hair or be nauseated all the time?” Gathering as much information as possible and talking to someone who has completed cancer treatment can be very helpful.

As treatment progresses, you may feel overwhelmed and unable to manage daily responsibilities as you deal with treatment side effects. Learning to anticipate and manage side effects can decrease emotional distress and restore your sense of control during this time.

When your treatment is complete, you may be anxious about a cancer recurrence and miss the reassurance of weekly visits to your doctor.  In an attempt to reassure you, loved ones may suggest that you should “simply forget about the cancer” now that your treatment is over.  When you talk with fellow survivors, you will learn that while some residual anxiety is normal, by continuing to be Patient Active, you can be more in control of your health from this day forward.
