About Us...
The Wellness Community of Southeast Michigan is Michigan’s local non-profit chapter of The Wellness Community- National. The Wellness Community (TWC) is the largest and most comprehensive program in the country devoted solely to providing psychosocial and educational support to people with cancer, their caregivers and children – all free of charge. Our mission is to help people affected by cancer enhance their health and well-being through participation in professional programs of emotional support, education and hope.
The Wellness Community exists to provide those aspects of cancer care that are critical, yet surprisingly most often not a part of traditional cancer treatment. TWC provides a feeling of community in a safe and comfortable environment, a resource for education and information, a place to gain support and nurturance, an environment of acceptance and hope, and a place to learn how to live fully with a cancer diagnosis. The Wellness Community does this through four core components: support groups, educational workshops, stress management and exercise classes, and social events. The components of TWC programs have been shown to improve patient health, mental health and quality of life.
The Wellness Community of Southeast Michigan is a unique, grass roots organization that was founded locally by a group of committed community volunteers who have each been personally touched by cancer, and who understand that traditional medical treatment is only one piece of successful cancer care. The Wellness Community is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and program guidance is offered by a Professional Advisory Board, consisting of experts in the field of oncology and social services.
