History

The Virtual Wellness Community was launched on Good Morning America in the spring of 2002 as a result of The Wellness Community's groundbreaking pilot study with Stanford University and the University of California at San Francisco. The study looked at the effectiveness of Online Support Groups for women with breast cancer by comparing the online groups with face-to-face support groups. The study results showed that the women who participated in the online groups had a decrease in depression and anxiety and an increase in zest for life and spirituality. The study also showed that the online groups have many similar characteristics to and benefits of face-to-face groups. This research was funded by the Breast Cancer Research Project.
